In the browser select all the images you want to sort.
From the Date menu, select Extended File Attribute > Remove Manual Order.
In the browser select Sort by name to reorder the thumbs by name then select Sort : Reorder manually
Sort the thumbs as desired.

There is no change to the rename function, so maybe you have some preferences problem. Please reset your prefs using GC First help here :

The metadata are store in the file in XMP metadata and IPTC metadata when applicable. So you don't loose the infos even if not on GC or not on a Mac
