Re: Google Photos incorrectly sorts images
I sent three example files to GC support address illustrating the problem. One type of problem files could simply be fixed by rebuilding metadata in GC, then trashing the *.jpg_original files. That was an easy fix although it is difficult to spot such files in advance. But I spotted other files wher...

[Solved] Google Photos incorrectly sorts images
Google Photos sorts some images with valid EXIF dates incorrectly. Do you have experience which metadata field might cause this and how to fix it? I have scanned 1000 old photos as .tif, edited and exported as .jpg from Lightroom. Renamed and inserted Captions, Keywords, locations, ratings and EXIF ...

TIFF compression and TIFF metadata
I have scanned paper photos with HP Scanjet G4010's compressed TIFF option (scanned as 600 ppi with the HP's slower 6-color scanning option which GC reports as Deep Color, RGB, 48 Bit, 16 Bit Padding, 281 Trillion Colors). I was surprised to notice that if I rotate the image in GC 10.6.6 browser, th...

Why Inserting a color profile adds a resource fork?
Why Misc... > Insert Profile adds a resource fork? I try to avoid them so I then have to remember to choose Misc... > Remove Resource Fork. (With some workflows Google Photos gets a wrong date instead using the EXIF date. I haven't investigated just what field it gets the date from so I have used br...

Old EXIF dates
Is there any limit what the oldest EXIF date can be? I just noticed that Google Photos does not display dates older than 1902 correctly. For example, date and time: 01.01.1901 08:00:00 is displayed as 06.12.1969 21:09:00. 01.01.1902 08:00:00 is displayed correctly. So with old images I have to tell ...

Re: IPTC Caption line breaks and max length
Sites like Google Photos ignore IPTC Caption linebreaks so as a workaround I have added extra spaces to those spots in case I forget editing the Captions inside Google Photos accordingly. Off topic: Google Photos was the best free photo publishing site I could find (Apple Photos and Dropbox did not ...

[Solved] IPTC Caption line breaks and max length
What is the proper way to add line breaks to IPTC Captions? I have made such Captions in BBEdit and pasted the text in the GC IPTC Caption field. I now noticed that Option-Return allows me to make a line break inside GC, too. Is there any difference in the result? (Using BBedit or some other text ed...

Google Maps alert
Why does GC Google Maps occasionally show an alert "This page can't load Google Maps correctly. Do you own this website?", and on the map there is a watermark "For development purposes only"? Apple Maps are OK. (GC 10.6.4, OS X 10.11.6).

[Solved] Keyword autocomplete, search results
I have few hundred old photos that I try to sort chronologically as well as I can. I save available info to the IPTC Caption and Keywords in addition to GPS coordinates and EXIF dates. I try to add as many relevant Keywords I can to make searching fast and accurate so I can compare similar photos wh...

Pre-1920 EXIF date weirdness
I have adjusted EXIF dates in old scanned .jpg photos via the GC browser (I also save Caption, Keywords, GPS and rating to the files). I rename the files as YYYY-MMDD-hhmm-ss.jpg (OS X 10.11.6, GC 10.6.2). Why do pre-1920 EXIF dates behave like this: I set the EXIF date as 1920-0601-1000-00 but the ...
