Creates mess adding background color

I am trying to create a cd insert with lyrics. I have a template .psd. I have put lyrics on the page with Helvetica font. Each time I go to add background color I get a pixalated mess and I can no longer read the lyrics. I'm also having trouble selecting text boxes. I am new to GC. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? ALSO I am trying to get this project done ASAP, as Christmas gifts. Where might I find a tutor for this sort of project, more readily available through the day and evening. Perhaps with Skype or email or....? Running GC 7.5 on an iMac running OS 10.6.8 Thanks,
