Is it possible to create a slideshow, and play a video within the resulting movie

A. Yes, it's in the manual.
first) you need to set your Preferences > Slide Show / General / Transition / Export to movie (size and audio file)
last) browse and choice images, then Slide Show / Export to Movie

I did all of that, I have a lot of still images and then an avi file that I want to play within the slideshow. The slideshow created Ok and exported to a mov file, but when I played back the slideshow and it came to the avi file it just showed the first frame as inverted for a second and then put it the right way up, and went no further.

workaround: make 1 slideshow "before avi" and another "After avi", then play in sequential mode with VLC

Please forward the AVI. Maybe it is not AVKit compatible.
Did you try to convert the AVI to a normal MOV?
