[Solved] V6.7.1 image files growing

Post by rldepugh »

Hi-
I realize that this is an old version of GC that I'm running (6.7.1). I am willing to update if that will fix the problem, but I am still on OSX 10.6.8, and need to be for now due to some other software compatibility issues.

Recently, my GC 6.7.1 has begun making image files that I work on much larger than it used to.

One example is if I have a new image in a folder, and it doesn't yet have a preview in the browser, and I chose the Create Preview option, the file size jumps from a 48k image to over 200k.

Another example is resizing images, I used to take an image that was 2.9Mb, 9478x6335 pixels, and resize it to 800x535, and I'd get a file that was about 200k at 80% quality. Now when I do that, I get a 962k file.

What would be causing this? How can I fix it?

Thanks.

Hi Ron,

please go to the prefs part save and uncheck the saving with resource fork. Maybe you did enable it.

Hi, Thorsten-

Yes, that was checked. I unchecked it, and saved it, shut down GC and restarted it, verified the setting is off, but it's still causing the same problems..

Any other ideas?

Maybe the preferences file is corrupt? You could trash it and start from a new version. My own file is located at ~ / Library / Preferences / com.lemkesoft.graphicconverter

Myself, I still work with GC 6.7.7 on both of my computers, under MOS X 10.6.8 and 10.8.5 respectively. In Preferences, you could check various tickboxes regarding which kind of preview icons you would like. That should make for a large or less large size addition to the file.

Earlier, I routinely added previews to image files (often a folder at a time). Nowadays I seldom care about it. Finder in (large) icon mode works very well as a file browser, and the previews that Finder makes don't seem to influence the file size (are they temporary?). Sometimes I even use Finder for slide shows as well. GC is still more flexible, but the combination of the two apps make my own life a lot easier.

My two cents/Per A.J. Andersson

Please e-mail a file before/after to support@lemkesoft.de
Please zip the file to keep the resource fork intact.

Hi, A.J.-

Yes, thanks, I already tried that before I wrote the first note about this. That had no effect, either.

Hi, Thorsten-

Ok, I'll send some files. Thanks.

I receive the sample files.
The large file size is caused by the preview and/or custom icon in the resource fork.
Just disable the creation in the prefs part save.
