[Solved] Core Image Filters not working

Post by yorick »

I've been using the Core Image Filters since they were added - long time user since v1 BTW.

Went to apply a filter to something and it is now failing. The Core Image Filter preview works just great, but when I click Apply nothing happens the picture just changes back to the unedited version as if the filter has been applied successfully, but it hasn't.

Tried lots of different filters, tried v9 and v10 no luck. Tried a simple app that also uses the core filters and it worked OK (badly, but OK).

Help!

I have no other such report.
The filters work here perfectly.

What happens if you trash your prefs with the GraphicConverter First Aid tool?

Trashing the prefs didn't help.

Only happens with .jpg files, if I convert to a TIFF then everything works fine.

Actually, only happens with some photos taken from my iPhone X.

See attached. Well I would say see attached, but the file is too big (5.4MB), anywhere I can send it for analysis?

Thanks

I received the file.

I found the issue:
The file contains as color profile "Apple Wide Color Sharing Profile.icc".
It seems that Apple Core Image Filters do not like it.
This is used by Apple for "Display P3" HEIC files that are shared as JPGs.

So, I convert such files now automatically back to the original "Display P3" upon import.

I suggest to access the HEIC files directly (i.e. via download from the iPhone or via Dropbox).
So, you avoid the quality loss due the recompression caused by the Apple sharing of HEIC as JPG.
