Accessing photos on iPhone XS Max with GC

When I plug in my iPhone to my Mac Pro (running Mojave, 10.14.3), a GC dialog appears asking if I'd like to browse images on my iPhone. When I click yes, the photos do not appear, even though the side panel shows a connection to my iPhone. I'm using GC 10.6.9.
The dialog states, "The device ,,iPhone is connected. Do you want to browse images? The connected camera will show up in the Browser under Devices."
Why am I unable to see and process the images?
