Trying to open a .ssd file

Hello all,
I am trying to open a file with a .ssd file extension. This is an image file created by a microscope at my friend's lab. He sent me some images from the microscope but I can't view them and he can't figure out how to save them in any format other than the default .ssd format.
I tried opening the files with Graphic Converter but it does not recognize them.
I am using Graphic Converter 11.1.2 on a Mac.
