Problem opening large ecw file

I am trying to open a subset of a 5.94 GB .ecw file. It only works (whatever size area I choose in the "Define ECW import area and scale" dialog box) if I set downsampling to factor 4 or greater. Otherwise I just get black pixels. I don't want to downsample. Any ideas?
