Why are jpg conversions larger than original tif files?

Am batch converting tif files I received from a friend to jpg files in Convert and Modify, with default Options: 90% Baseline; 4:2:2; Don't embed sRGB profile checked; no other embed metadata options checked; Store EXIF Preview 200x200 checked; Write JFIF header checked. jpg files are bigger than the original tifs; for example, tif of 1.2 MB makes a jpg of 1.5 MB. GC 8.6 (1200) Any comments? Thanks. Harvey
