EXIF Dates

Post by iamabbqueen »

I am very confused about the different EXIF dates available and I'm hoping someone can help. When I look at the EXIF tool the date fields available are:---- System ----File Modification Date/Time: 2014:10:04 08:04:22-05:00---- IFD0 ----Modify Date: 2014:10:15 11:18:31---- ExifIFD ----Date/Time Original: 2014:10:15 11:18:31Create Date: 2014:10:15 11:18:31Sub Sec Time: 40Sub Sec Time Original: 40Sub Sec Time Digitized: 40---- XMP-exif ----Date/Time Digitized: 2014:10:04 08:04:22Date/Time Original: 2014:10:04 08:04:22---- XMP-xmp ----Create Date: 2014:10:04 08:04:22Metadata Date: 2014:10:15 06:18:31-05:00Modify Date: 2014:10:15 06:18:31-05:00Create Date: 2014:10:15 11:18:31.40Date/Time Original: 2014:10:15 11:18:31.40Modify Date: 2014:10:15 11:18:31.40The October 15 dates got changed to that when I went to Metadata> "Edit or Add EXIF Data" and entered "2014:10:04 08:04:22" for the File Date.  I have no idea why it changed it to October 15th (today is Oct 21).The two fields I see for changing dates are Metadata> "Edit or Add EXIF Data" and Metadata> "Set EXIF Date...". Also I see how to shift the time/date.So here are my questions:- When I (my computer) changes time zones, the System> File Modification Date/Time changes.  It's not changing any data in my picture, is it?  - What does that mean that the System> File Modification Date/Time is xxx-5:00?  I know I'm -5hrs from GMT but what does that have to do with the picture and why should it change?- What is the difference between ExifIFD info, XMP-exif info and XMP-xmp info? How can the same fields under different headers have different data. Thanks for the help.

Hello, that is a bit more complex. The File Modification date is the date of the file in the file system (not part of the metadata). Now the metadata:A typical file like a JPEG or a TIFF can contain the following metadata:- EXIF (normally used for the camera data at the moment of the recording of the image)- IPTC (normally used for data describing the image)- XMP is XML encoded metadata; normally it contains the IPTC data UTF8 encoded and some more data; but some applications like Photoshop do mirror some or all EXIF data in addition to the exif record to the XMP record - ICC contains the color profileSo, an image file can contain the same metadata twice. That can cause a lot of trouble. So, what is your workflow? Can I get a sample file?Thorsten I am very confused about the different EXIF dates available and I'm hoping someone can help. Thanks for the response.Generally I set my cameras' clocks to GMT and do not change it when I cross time zones.  When I get home I upload my photos to my computer and time shift them to local time (where the photo was taken) based on the time shown on the picture I have taken of my GPS.  I am careful that I keep them in chronological order even when crossing time zones. When home, I tag photos I am going to delete as RED.  This will often taken several days.  When I change the tag, I notice that the file modification date changes to the current date, and the File Creation Date and EXIF: Date and Time of Original Data Generation stay at the desired date/time.  EXIF: File Date and Time stays at the date I uploaded the the picture to the computer.Under Action> Metadata, what is the difference in the date fields between Set EXIF Date and Edit or Add EXIF Data?  Generally when I manipulate the "EXIF date" of my photos I am using Shift EXIF Timestamp or Set EXIF Date, then I select Set File Creation and Modification Date to EXIF Date.  Is there another date field I should be looking at?Thanks.

Hello, please check the name:"Set EXIF Date” can only change the exif date“Edit or Add EXIF Data” (DATA not DATE) can edit various standard exif fields.Thorsten Under Action> Metadata, what is the difference in the date fields between Set EXIF Date and Edit or Add EXIF Data?  Generally when I manipulate the "EXIF date" of my photos I am using Shift EXIF Timestamp or Set EXIF Date, then I select Set File Creation and Modification Date to EXIF Date.  Is there another date field I should be looking at?
