[Solved] mp4 dates not sorting correctly

Post by ksdavidc »

EDIT: I apologize. The files I used in my original post were not actually demonstrative.

Also,

fixed my problem. Thanks to him and others who replied.

----- BELOW rewritten question for posterity:

I am trying to use the "sort files into folders by date" command

Here are two files:

Underneath you see the creation date, the modification date and the exif date.

Using the command, the jpg gets properly filed under 6/26 (modification/exif), but the mp4 is put into 7/1 (creation).

This is what I wanted to fix and was fixed by using the suggestion from Joerg.

(sidenote: In this example, the mod and exif are the same, but in my OP, they were different, which threw me off. After testing, I see this is not the usual/relevant case.)

-----ORIGINAL MESSAGE FOR REFERENCE...IGNORE

I am somewhat new to the software. I am using version 12 on a Mac with Monterey.

I have a bunch of photos I manually copied into a folder on an external storage drive from my pixel phone. They are all in one folder.

The folder consists of a series of photos and mp4 files, as show in this image:

You will notice that the date created is July 9, the date modified is July 8th, for booth files, but the date captured is different in the 2 formats.
In fact, both the picture and the mp4 were taken on Jul 8th at 4:53 and 4:42, respectively.

All the mp4, in fact, have the July 9th date captures, which is the date I saved them to my external disk. The jpgs have the day I took the picture.

Of course, there are many other files in the folder with different dates, like July 6th, etc. All in one folder.

Naturally, I want to sort all these files into subfolders. Running this command works fine for the JPG files, but the mp4s do not get put into th date I expect (aka the date they were taken) but are all put into one folder...the last one.

I imagine I need to update the dates somehow but:
a. do not quite know what I need to change and what to change it to.
b. how to do that successfully.

I would appreciate any assistance someone could offer. I am not a professional photographer, so I don't know the correct interpretation of all the different dates, nor how the software determines what date to use for the sort.

Thank you in advance.

If you copy files manually -> Date Created will be changed by macOS.

Open the folder in the GC browser.

Select one JPG file - right mousekey
Than use - Set File Creation and Modification Date with Exif Date

Are the dates correct now?

If you use the macOS APP - Image Capture - for copying there is no date changing.

I sort by Name or Creation Date (Exif Date).
- Creation Date were you record pictures, videos.
