[Solved] EXIF date/time altered by changing camera data

Post by PakkyT »

I am going through old photos from a camera I used from 1998-2000 which apparently predates the standardized EXIF data we have now. So I am trying to fill in some EXIF data in batches for such things as MAKE & Model of camera as well as setting the EXIF date/times.

First problem:
For editing Make and Model when selecting a batch of photos and right clicking for the contextual menu there are two choices for this...

CommonValues.jpg
CommonValues.jpg (53.03 KiB) Viewed 321 times
In the first one, common values, is shows the picture data/time and in the second it shows the Exif time. When you select a batch of photos there is no way to disable changing the date/time. So for instance I can not simple add a Make and Model camera without changing the entire batch to have the same creation date or exif date.

Second problem:
I am trying to get all the dates and times to match (EXIF, creation, modification) and then I want to update the files names from my old standard MMDDYY-hh.mm.ss to YYYY.MM.DD-hh.mm.ss which for my basic saved rename function pull this info from the EXIF. My files names are correct so if there is a difference between the file name and the date/times in the metadata, I want the file name data to be used. So I tried...

setbyfilename.jpg
setbyfilename.jpg (35.55 KiB) Viewed 321 times
and after doing that, if I go into the rename screen and my source pull down is set to "Exif date", the rename function doesn't see any Exif info so that 040799-22.59.55.jpg is shown that it will be renamed to .jpg so setting EXIF to filename, if it is changing something, is putting that info in some other "exif" field than the rename function uses.

Likewise if my modification date is correct and I try to set my exif to modification data using one of these...

ModificationDate.jpg
ModificationDate.jpg (34.17 KiB) Viewed 321 times
In the top case pointed at, it works in that the rename function now populated the "change to" file name with source picked as EXIF. However strangely, if I choose the second one pointed to, the rename function show the "change to" as .jpg when using EXIF which means that the "only is no edit data exists" choose thinks there is valid exif data so doesn't make the change yet the rename function doesn't find any exif data.

Thanks for the sample files.

The JPEGs are from an old Olympus camera without any Exif data.
But they contain APP12 Picture Info marker.

I added now a function to set the Exif data from that info. Please check.

Ah Sequoia bug. The menu item selection is not in the screenshot.

It is the function Set Exif and IPTC/XMP from Picture… and the other Set Exif from Picture…

You find it in the latest BETA:

Once again, excellent! And I just assigned a shortcut key to one of them.

As always, the best customer service in the entire App/Software world! :D
