Favicons are shown as thumbnails in GC browser but otherwise unhandled by GC

Post by porg »

For certain file types (concretely: favicon)
  • ✅ GraphicConverter's browser renders their thumbnails fine
  • but ❌ Preview shows no image
  • but ❌ Info Panel → Image → File Format: Empty/unrecognized
  • but ❌ cannot open the file via GC Browser
  • but ❌ cannot open the file from Finder: The document “filename-here” could not be opened.
How can GC render a thumbnail preview when it otherwise cannot handle the image file type?
Please improve the inconsistency here. Thanks!

Just pick any favicon stored by Safari on your own machine:

~/Library/Safari/Favicon Cache/favicons/<32 hexadecimal characters and no file ending>

In addition to that I sent you the Youtube favicon as a sample via email.

File magic identified it as follow:

$ file ~/Library/Safari/Favicon\ Cache/favicons/youtube.bin
MS Windows icon resource - 2 icons, 32x32, 32 bits/pixel, 16x16, 32 bits/pixel

Curious what you find out.

The correct file extension for favicon is .ico
This extension is used for such files onto any web server, too.
GraphicConverter displays it correctly with the correct extension.

The latest BETA of GC will detect the icons in the cache folder without extension, too.
