Change Bit Depth color choices

I often want to convert images from 16.7 million colors down using Change Bit Depth Dynamically. I'm usually doing this on images that I'm going to save as GIFs, a flat background color with some type over it. When I first choose this command, the background color is invariably different. There is no way I know of to preserve that background color no matter what. Is there a way to do this? I'd love to be able to lock some colors to ensure they never change, or at least make them the last to change as I dial the colors down. Joe
