Find Duplicates

Post by Joe Walters »

OS 10.4.1 GC 5.6.2 In the following four examples it is always the same folder that I'm browsing. The folder I'm browsing is named 2005 and it contains 35 folders which contain the 5289 political cartoons. (Several of these folders have sub-folders. There is no way that there are so many duplicates as the first two runs indicate. Find Similar files (slow) More tolerant (slider is far right) Number of cartoons 5289 Number of duplicates 4809 Find Similar files (slow Start 3:14 End 3:28) Less tolerant (slider is far left) Number of cartoons 5289 Number of duplicates 3111 Find Similar files (slow Start 3:31 End 3:46) Less tolerant (slider is far left) Use more memory Compare in grayscale Number of cartoons 5289 Number of duplicates 0 ===== Totally different problem, if it is a problem ==== Find exact matching files only Less tolerant (slider is far left) <=== Makes no difference Use more memory <=== Makes no difference Compare in grayscale <=== Makes no difference Number of cartoons 5289 Number of duplicates 14 The first time I ran this one it read 548 files and found 14 duplicates. They were duplicates so I removed the duplicate files. The problem is that it only reads 548 files, does the compare, doesn't find any duplicates (cause I deleted them) and quits i.e., it doesn't test the remaining 4,741 files. Am I missing something? If it is somehow comparing all 5,289 files it is doing it in about 15 seconds. At all reasonable for a G4/450? ===== Different folder Find exact matching files only Less tolerant (slider is far left) <=== Makes no difference Number of cartoons 521 files in 46 folders Number of duplicates 5 I know that exact match says "fast" but does it seem reasonable that a G4/450 could look through the above 521 files in about 3 seconds? It is so fast that the screen giving the total files comes and goes so fast I can't read it. I had to get the information about the folder using Super Get Info. Hello, the exact match compares the filelength first. Only the content for matching files. So, this is really fast. I will check the other issue. Find Duplicates

Post by Joe Walters »

Thorsten, OS 10.4.1 GC 5.6.3 I reported this some weeks ago. You said that you would look into it. Any conclusions? Background: I collect political cartoons from 140+ cartoonists from around the world. For 2005 they consist of 297 MB, 6,191 files and 40 folders according to SuperGetInfo When I select to browse the 2005 folder in GC Edit > Find Duplicate Files Find Exact matching files only (fast) Slider to far left i.e., Less Tolerant Click Start GC finds 6,149 files (42 less than Supere Get Info. No idea who is wrong here.) Begins comparing in step 1 and gets to 726 and moves to step 2 where it did find 20 some duplicates that were indeed duplicates The thing that bothers me is that 726 is far short of 6,000+. Let me know if you would like to have my files to test with. I'd be glad to burn you a CD. BTW, for all years I have 13,495 files. Asking GC to find duplicates results in step 1 finding 3,473 files to test. Does not find any duplicates. Maybe everything is OK and I just don't understand. Hi, I did not check this, yet. I am still searching for a better algorithm. Thorsten > > I reported this some weeks ago. You said that you would look into it. > Any conclusions?

Find Duplicates

Post by Joe Walters »

Folks, This from the Hagen manual: > Find duplicate files > If a browser window is open, you can use Edit / Find duplicate files... to search for duplicates in the folder currently displayed including all subfolders. You can then delete any files you do not need. A dialog opens where you can specify whether only completely identical files should be found or whether similar files should also be displayed as identical. If you decide to search for similar files, you can use the slide to specify how tolerant GraphicConverter should be. Select the more tolerant setting to display versions that differ more greatly as duplicates. I assume the phrase, "If a browser window is open" means that File > Browse Folder on my part would result in a browser window being open. I then cannot find: Edit / Find duplicate files Where have I gone wrong? Later, -- Joe Walters: To know, and not to do, is not yet to know

Hello, this function is now in the context menu of the browser's middle section. Will update my manual. Find Duplicates + Another request

I found it by Cmd+Ctrl+Click and it worked wonderfully! I do have an additional question/request. My eyes are not as sharp as they once were and I found it very difficult to read the path text of the two duplicates. Is there a way to increase the fonts at least 2 points? I guess the same goes for most menu items. Kind Regards, -- Joe Walters: To know, and not to do, is not yet to know

Hello, the middle section is where the thumbnails are displayed in contrast to the left hand section with the file tree. To open the context menu please use Ctrl.-Click everywhere in all software even in the Finder. To display menus larger please low the resolution of your monitor. This is not a good idea on TFT displays but on the old monitors with TV technology I don't find the word for in my dictionary (German: Roehrenmonitor). Roehre is tube. Hagen,It is not the context menu that Joe has trouble reading, it is the text in the duplicate list file path that GC gives us.  I also have the same problem reading the file path for the duplicates. Is this text the same size as the text for the file names in the browser that we can set in the pref.?  ThankskeithOn May 24, 2006, at 2:02 AM, Hagen Henke wrote: Hello, the middle section is where the thumbnails are displayed in contrast to the left hand section with the file tree. Hagen -The English equivalent of "Roehrenmonitor" is probably Cathode Ray Tube (CRT for short). The text that Mr. Walters is referring to I believe is the actual pathname of the duplicates as they are displayed in the Found Duplicates dialogue.I too would like to see more control over details in GC's user interface - some adjustability in the smaller font size in this dialogue would be welcome. I also would like to ask again for some additional information to be optionally displayed for found duplicates - just like the checkbox that will display the images' dimensions. I think having the choice of displaying the files' compression ratios would be very useful - at least to us.-Jim***************On May 24, 2006, at 2:02 AM, Hagen Henke wrote: Hello, the middle section is where the thumbnails are displayed in contrast to the left hand section with the file tree.
