Browser - number of columns shrink

We have just moved to a new MacBook Pro from our PowerBook. My wife has just reported an annoying, frequent but not 100% consistent behaviour: - Browse a folder of images and sub-folders. Set it to display, say, 5 columns of thumbnails, preview pane on the right and no folder hierarchy on the left. - Double-click a sub-folder in the browser so it opens a new Browser window. - The new Browser window usually has 4 columns - one less that the original. - Now double-click a sub-folder in the new Browser window. - The new Browser window will usually open with 3 columns - one less than this parent Browser. - You can keep doing this 'till the new Browser has only one column.
