Insertion of text in layout

I am trying to make up a layout consisting of pix plus text headings and titles, the text being on the layout and not on the pix themselves. With great help from this site I have sorted out the pix side, but can still not work out how to insert text on to the layout. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Bernard Watson.
