Can't Geo-tag TIFFs

I cannot geo-tag TIFF format (extension *.tif) files. When I have Google Earth open with the desired location, choosing "Set GPS from current Google Earth position" produces no results, no GPS icon, and no GPS coords in metadata. Works fine with JPGs, but not TIFs--why?
