jpeg file opens as all black

Post by Rowland Carson »

I'm still using a rather old version of GraphicConverter (5.9.5 X) and I have no trouble with it, until just recently when I tried to open some photos downloaded from a relatively new site: http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/ The pictures appear to download OK, and in the Finder they show a preview as expected, but when I open them in GC the window is all black. I don't know what to do to reveal the picture. I tried opening the picture in Adobe Photoshop Elements and got a message "The embedded ICC profile cannot be used because the ICC profile is invalid. Ignoring the profile." The picture then opened visible as expected. I saved it from APE and was able to open the resulting file OK in GC. It appears that all the pictures available for download from that website behave the same way. I wonder is there something "wrong" with the way they have been made available on the website, or is there something "wrong" with GC (or my GC preference settings) that makes the pictures unusable? (Or is it finally time for me to upgrade GC?) I'm happy to send copies of the files in question for investigation, or anyone can download from that site to try and see if they get different behaviour.
