GC 8 questions

Post by havema1 »

Just upgraded from GC 6.7.7 to 8.2.2.I had my workflows set for v6.7.7:1. I used GC slideshow to sort through images: right/left arrows to go through them and the delete key to get rid of bad images (after that I went through the Finder trash with the space bar & QuickLook before emptying the trash). But in GC 8.2.2 the slideshow seems to be TOO fancy for this task... Am I missing a setting or is there a better workflow to do this??2. I rename JPG, CR (raw) and MOV files based on their dates as YYYY-MMDD-hhmm-ss.jpg etc.Renaming JPG and CR works as usual in GC 8.2.2. But opening the browser seems to take MUCH longer than it used to (although renaming a lot of CR files was slow also with v6.7.7). Is there a setting to make it go faster?3. Renaming MOV files (from Canon EOS 550D) as YYYY-MMDD-hhmm-ss.mov has always been a pain:In GC 6.7.7 I imported MOV so that I also got the accompanying THM text files. I had to import from from a card reader because for some reason importing from the camera via USB cable didn't get THM files (yes, I tried to un-ignore the in the GC prefs).Somehow imported THM files got also the MOV files' times correct (*) and after that I could use GC to rename as  YYYY-MMDD-hhmm-ss.mov and trash the otherwise unnecessary THM files.(*) I live +2 hours GMT. PLEASE prove me wrong, but it seems I need to import the THM files -- otherwise MOV files' time is +2 hours off (in the summer it is +3 hours. Yes, the camera time is correct and it doesn't have a setting for world time. Yes, another option would be to just ignore THM files and just shift the file time -2 hours with FileBuddy, then rename with GC. Or set the camera time -2 hours off...).Question: So GC 6.7.7 imported those THM from a card reader OK. But GC 8.2.2 seems to ignore THM although I have tried to un-ignore and allow them in the Browser settings (unlike GC 6.7.7, v8.2.2 also sees the DCIM part of the card and the THMs, but then there is no import-function)....frustrated, I re-installed GC 6.7.7 to OS X 10.9 although the toolbar icons don't display properly...Thanks for any info. I'm so eager to finally upgrade GC.- Matti

Hello Matti, please trash the preferences file. Maybe something was corrupted.Thorsten On 10.11.2013, at 21:27, <matti.haveri@gmail.com> <matti.haveri@gmail.com> wrote: Just upgraded from GC 6.7.7 to 8.2.2.I had my workflows set for v6.7.7:

> please trash the preferences file. Maybe something was corrupted. OK, I'll try that although this was a clean install of OS X 10.9 and GC 8.2.2. Now I have installed also GC 6.7.7 which seems to use the same prefs file as 8.2.2. Can they share the same prefs without problems? Has anyone else noticed digital camera MOV files' incorrect file times (iPhone MOVs are OK, obviously they store the date inside the file?)? Somehow importing the THM file sets the MOV file times correct at least with my setup (initially I though that GC read some info from the THM when renaming, but it seems it is the MOV file time that matters). And, is there a setting to use a very basic slideshow to sort the bad pictures out? Or some other workflow? In the past I used Cameraid.app for this: it allowed my to give plus/minus points to images and then send the desired images to the trash. After Cameraid got incompatible, I started to use GC for this. - Matti

> I though that GC read some info from the THM when renaming GC does indeed seem to get the correct time info from THM:If I import MOV & THM files with GC 6.7.7, the MOV file times are correct and GC 6&8 can rename them correctly based on time. But if I delete the THM files, then GC renames MOVs +2hours. ...and if GC 8.2.2 doesn't import THM in the first place, then the MOV time is +2 hours and GC renames them +4 hours!I haven't yet succeeded to import THM with GC 8.2.2 -- only with GC 6.7.7. I deleted GC prefs file from ~Library//Preferences but it didn't help. Un-ignoring THM in the Browser prefs didn't help either. It seems GC sees the THM only in the Browser's DCIM part which doesn't show the import-button. The device-part which shows the import button seems to ignore THM files.

Hello Matti, yes, Apple does store GPS and the time inside a MOV. But other camera manufacturers do not support this.GC 6 and 8 can use the same prefs file.Thorsten On 11.11.2013, at 13:14, Matti Haveri <matti.haveri@gmail.com> wrote: > please trash the preferences file. Attachments :pastedGraphic.tiff I just upgraded from V6 a few days ago and everything was working well. Earlier today, I tried to do a batch conversion for the first time. GC launched, then hung. I force quit, tried again and same result. I trashed preference file, but still hangs on launch. Suggestions? Email the CrashLog? Stephen R. what memory if I may ask do you have {RAM}?What OS ver. and machine? If it makes any difference the Apple system seems to lock a lot compared to others hence that old force quit.. I have my similar times when apps. of Apple lock and spin that ball...After so many Apple asks for a 'report log' be sent to them. Preview and GC have been sort of over used abused by me since 2005 went through all versions since 7.6.2 is nicest of them. Stable I mean.
