Gradient rectangle fill?

I am driving myself nuts this morning .  I could swear that I have been able to fill a rectangle with a gradient but I simply cannot remember and/or figure out how to do it again.  Can someone point me in the right direction?  Do I have to use a certain file format to use a gradient?  Thanks.
