No error, no alert, no hint as to why GC would not accept the name. In GC 8 if you do the same thing you get a cryptic alert but at least it lets you know something happened:

Dear Jim,I can`t reproduce this here.But it really seems to be a system issue.Because GC6 uses the old Carbon file manager and GC8 the new Cocoa file manager.
