[Solved] Cursor will suddenly no longer "select"! Aaggghhh!!!

I have used Graphic Converter for years and I am suddenly having a problem that is driving me CRAZY.
I am using version 10.5.5.
(Excuse my incorrect terminology below.)
Normally, when you open an image, you click with your mouse, drag the cursor, lift up your finger, and you’ve selected a rectangular area to work with.
Today, I somehow changed *some* setting on Graphic Converter — I can’t figure out which one — and NOW when I “click and drag,” NOTHING happens — the arrow cursor seems to change randomly to a crosshairs or a hand, but that’s about it. I can’t figure out how to get things back to “normal.”
I’ve tried all the following, with no luck:
* going through every setting I could find;
* going through every preference I could find;
* looking through the manual;
* selecting “Restore to Defaults” in the Preferences;
* deleting the program and its file in “Application Support” and re-installing it;
* restarting my computer.
Nothing has worked!
I’m sure that’s it some tiny, tiny setting somewhere, but for the life of me, I can’t find it.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! I’m at the end of my rope!!!!!!!
Thanks to all,
Jellybean
