Why Inserting a color profile adds a resource fork?

Why Misc... > Insert Profile adds a resource fork?
I try to avoid them so I then have to remember to choose Misc... > Remove Resource Fork.
(With some workflows Google Photos gets a wrong date instead using the EXIF date. I haven't investigated just what field it gets the date from so I have used brute force and nuked ALL metadata + Camera metadata with GC. But that nukes also the color profile so I have to use "Insert profile" to add it back. OS X 10.11.6, GC 10.6.6.)
