Can't work with .jpg image files in GC 10.6.8

Since updating to the latest version of GC, I can't adjust quality/compression setting and successfully save the resulting file. I get an error message telling me it can't be saved. No explanation given. I checked all the settings I could and can't find the issue. I'm somewhat of a novice at this, but never had problems before the update. Tried various jpegs; pngs convert to jpegs and vice versa just fine. jpeg > jpeg no good. What's happening?

hmm, the JPEG saving was not changed.

Do you use the normal or the Mac App Store version of GraphicConverter?

The normal version, downloaded from your site. Just so you know, I've tried re-installing, resetting my Mac (SMC & NVRAM, etc), cleaning out the caches. Nothing will make this work. Very frustrating.

Normal Mac version. Also, I noticed some mention of this problem the other day from someone else with this issue, with no solution. Now I can't find the post!

Maybe your prefs got corrupted.
Please trash them with our First Aid Tool:

I just rechecked. The saving of a JPEG works here without any issue.
Is there any message in the console?

I ran the First Aid Tool. Conversion attempts failed with different error messages. See attachment. I've had enough for tonight. This used be easy. Now...?

-48 means: file already open with write permission.
Did you maybe open the file already with a second application?
What happens after a restart of your machine?
Where are the files stored?
