Select similar. Why is this feature greyed out? How do I use it?

"Select similar" is only active if the Magic Pen tool is selected and you clicked one or more times into the image.

The command will deselect the current selection and will apply the Magic Pen tool for the last selected color to the complete image.

Thanks. That is how I thought it should work. Not sure what I was doing wrong. Is it possible to set up a short cut key for it?

You can define a shortcut in the System Preferences.
