Black horizontal line

Post by ZalLazkovich » Wed Nov 27, 2019 7:06 am

Hello,
I'm working SwiftPublisher to create posters. Then save the final to JPEG thru SwiftPublisher and then open it with GC to do editing and enhancements and save it.
Never a problem, always smooth perfect images.
The last image saved as JPEG has a thin black horizontal line running along the top edge of the JPEG - that after doing what I've described above: saving as JPEG in SwiftPublisher, then opening it with GC, editing and saving.
It only appears after doing editing in GC.
If I'm NOT doing any editing, there is no black line.
What can be a problem here ?

Thanks,
Zal

Thorsten - I see a thin 'grey' line at the top, just beneath the word 'Attachments' could that be the line in reference? Or is that simply an artifact of the way that phpBB is displaying the attachment? I have attached a sample image (it's a red box with yellow text). My sample image doesn't contain any 'lines' just a transparent border around the red box with yellow text (attached inline/beneath this text). Preview of this message depicted sampleimage.png as having a black line drawn around sample image. I didn't include any black line around the transparent border area of the image (perhaps that is also an artifact of the phpBB preview function?)

I checked your file. It contains no gray bar - only transparency around it.

Thorsten - Thanks for the reply. I was not the original poster, but I thought that the grey line that I see in the original image (thin grey line is seen while viewing the image in the phpBB forum. The thin grey line appears just beneath the word 'ATTACHMENTS') might have been inserted as part of the phpBB display process. It doesn't look that way. I wonder what process (used by original poster ZalLazKovich) is being used to display the original image (1949instantCorrEtsy.jpg) in the phpBB forum? The original poster's image contains a thin black line all the way around it - just like my image. That is being inserted by the phpBB software. phpBB also seems to be inserting the name of the image, its size, and number of times viewed, just beneath the image. The original poster's image is displayed in the phpBB forum with five artifacts:

1 - A thin dotted line all the way around the image.
2 - The word 'ATTACHMENTS' above the image.
3 - A thin grey line beneath the word 'ATTACHMENTS' (just above the image).
4 - A thin black line all the way around the boundary of the image (this is not the 'frame' option that can be displayed when viewing images in GraphicConverter)
5 - Image information (Name of image, size of image, number of times viewed).

I did what you did to my image. I extracted it (the original poster's image) from the phpBB forum, then I displayed it ('File->New->Image from clipboard') in GraphicConverter. When I do that, none of the artifacts described above are displayed. I believe that artifacts 4 and 5 are added by the phpBB forum software during the display process. It is possible that artifacts 1, 2 and 3 are the result of using email to post a response to the phpBB forum. I directly entered my initial reply to the forum (I didn't reply to the forum via email). I clicked the 'Post Reply' button on the phpBB website and used the 'Attachments' tab to directly upload/attach my image to the phpBB forum). Perhaps artifacts 1-3 are a result of forwarding a response/posting a message via email? I will test this after posting this reply.

As noted, I extracted the original poster's image from the phpBB forum and displayed it in GraphicConverter. When I did that, I didn't see any of the artifacts mentioned. As you noted in your original response. No black line is seen in the original poster's image. I wonder where the original poster is viewing the image?

I now understand why you are always asking to have the original image emailed to you. The phpBB software is inserting numerous artifacts, and the email to forum process might also be inserting artifacts. For that matter, a person's email client (used to post to the forum) might be inserting additional artifacts. There could be lots of artifacts introduced during the process of posting to the forum and displaying the image in the forum. You definitely need the original image sent do you.

Thorsten - I thought I could send an email reply to the phpBB forum, but it seems that isn't possible. This version of phpBB doesn't seem to offer an email reply to a forum thread/topic. Subscribers receive notifications with links to the forum, but it doesn't seem that one can reply to a posted message via email. I guess I'm just too used to the mailman mailing list paradigm (I'm still subscribed to a lot of mailman mailing lists). I still find it curious that the original poster's image appears with the other artifacts I mentioned. Artifacts 1 - 3 aren't part of the phpBB posting process.
