[Solved] Change the Color of an Object

I'm trying to change the color of a woman's sweater in an image from black to gray without success. I've tried to paint it in with the eyedropper and the brush, but the result is uneven and destroys the texture of the sweater. Can anyone suggest the tools and technique to do this so it looks natural? Thanks.

I suggest to select the sweater with the lasso tool and create a new layer with the selection.
Now you can modify the colors of that layer.
