mp4 video files play jerky twitchy

GC plays most mp4 video files just fine, but i have some that are playing very jerkily. The picture looks just fine, clear and bright, except that any thing moving does so in a herky-jerky irregular manner, and when it's a person just lifting their arm, say, it looks like they have a neurodegenerative disorder causing their arms, legs, hands, fingers, etc. to tremble, shimmy, and shake. Quite bizarre, and only affects some mp4 video files.
Oh, also, the mp4 files in question play just fine in other apps.
I could include one of the problem ones if a sample would be helpful.
