[Closed] NAS volume derails browser (occasionally)

Post by chrillek »

Hi, I have my pictures on a NAS (Synology), mounted via SMB to my laptop (GC 11.3.2). That works fine most of the time. Sometimes though, the browser in GC goes beserk und shows every picture several times:

(in this case, it tells me that it has 8000 pictures in a folder with only about 1350).
In the finder, everything is ok (notet there's only one IMG_1757.jpeg.

I've seen this behavior if I mounted the volume over SMB and AFS. In this example, it occured after I tried to rename a file, though not this one. The problem goes away if I unmount and re-mount the volume.

I just call the macOS file manager for the list of files.
So, that seems to be a system issue.

Which macOS do you use?

I'm on Big Sur. Since the Finder doesn't show the same phonmenon, I suspect a glitch in the browser's representation.

The browser calls the file system for the file list.
So, the problem must be caused by the macOS system routines or the NAS.

I can't reproduce this here with my Synology with AFP. (It uses the latest firmware)
I can't reproduce this here with my QNAP with SMB. (It uses the latest firmware)

Which NAS do you use?

Which macOS do you use? Is the latest firmware on the NAS?

What happens if you select Refresh in the context menu?

It just happened again. I suppose the error message resulted from renaming a file in the browser. IMG_2248.jpeg is not there anymore and it's not in the NAS's trash, either. If I look at the same folder in the Finder, there's only one file called "Bomben im Tempel.jpeg".

Interestingly, I now see _some_ pictures in the browser four times, some only once and another one three times ...

I have a Synology DS220+ with DSM 6.2.3-25426 Update 2, Mac OS 11.0.1. According to the update information, the DSM is the latest version available.

I'm not sure what "Refresh in the context menu" means. I have "Überprüfen". When I select that one, it actually fixes the problem.

Thanks for the reply.

What happens if you trash the prefs with our First Aid Tool?
https://www.lemkesoft.info/files/graphi ... st_aid.dmg

Please backup your prefs first.

Because I get here a refresh after the rename.

Saved prefs and trashed them. Now I'm not sure if we're talking about the same context menu. Here's what I do:
- open a folder on my NAS volume in GC's browser
- select a foto by clicking on it
- right click
- context menu appears, first entry is "Open with", then comes "Open"... then somewhere down the list is "Change name" ("Name ändern"), "Rename (modern method)", "Rename (simple method" ("Umbenennen ...") and "Find", "Modify status" ... The last two entries are "Show" and "Verify (F5)".

is that what you meant? If not, what context menu are you referring to?

Yes, I mean that last menu item.

Did the trashing of the prefs change anything?

No. It looked ok yesterday evening, but today (without having even worked with GC), I see again lots of pictures several times in the browser.

Could it have something to do with the browser settings for "Cloud drives"? I have added the NAS volume there, but I'm not sure if that is necessary or not, given that I have the volume mounted in Finder anyway.

Interestingly, I just noticed the same behavior with ACDSee. So it is probably a "feature" of the underlying CIFS/SMB service. Perhaps related to Big Sur or to some setting in my NAS that I'm not aware of.
