[Solved] Rename files via lookup table

Post by GwentLarry »

OK, I am in the process of digitising a large number (2000+) of old slides.

At the time, I carefully indexed all these slides using a system which made perfect sense at the time. Now, it seems a rather stupid way to have indexed the slides … However, at the time, I also made a table giving details of each slide.

So, as I scan the slides, I am giving them a file name the same as the original index.

What I want to do is give every image file a new name according to a new file name added to the original table.

So, I need an automatic process which will find the original file name in the lookup table and assign the new name. It would be good if each image could also be tagged with other details from the table but this is not essential. Currently, the table is in Mac Numbers format but could be converted to a variety of other formats if needed.

I am unfamiliar with the batch processing facilities of GraphicConverter but a quick look doesn't suggest this is possible?

Is it possible to do this within GraphicConverter or do I need to find a separate application or Finder level script to do the renaming?

Thank you.

Hi,

that is currently not supported.

Can I get the spreadsheet for checking?

Just e-mail to support@lemkesoft.de

OK - I wasn't sure because I don't use some of the more sophisticated capabilities of GC.

The spreadsheet is currently in Numbers although I can convert to Excel if you'd prefer?

Thanks,

Larry

Sorry for not replying sooner.

Although I have notifications set to email me when there is a reply, for some reason it doesn't seem to work …

OK - part of the indexing file attached.

Index is the original index for the slides and the index assigned as I digitise - the images in GC currently have this as the file name,
Slide No. I'm adding from the original slides as I digitise,
Date, Location and Subject are from the original index table.

New Index is calculated from the data in the table - I haven't yet finally decided exactly how I will calculate this. I'll need to get further along in digitising before I can decide.

So, what I want to do is rename the image files acording to this table by finding the file name according to the index and renaming to the tabulated New Index.

Sorry - just realised I didn't attach the file :-)

However, when I try to attach the Numbers file, it is not allowed. It says wrong extension … It seems I am only allowed to attach image format files.

So, I have changed the extension to .jpg I am then allowed to upload the file. If you change the extension back to .numbers, it should work.

Thanks,

Larry

I added it.

Just download the latest BETA:
http://www.lemkesoft.org/beta.html

Select all files in the browser and use the following function.

The spreadsheet requires a header cell index and new index.
