Keywords Tags Finder tags (spotlight) Comments
I am a little at sea (lost) with sorting my photos. I want to use the resources available such as: keywords: tags, finder tags, and comments, but I am not sure of their correct usage. Is there a guide to which does what best, how to use them, and how to use them together? tia.

I suggest to use IPTC/XMP keywords.
Just use the browser, select a file and press command + I. Enter your keywords under the keywords tab and check the option "Set Keywords as Finder Tags".
