[Solved] Black background / overlay when I move selected content

I keep having a situation where copy/paste introduces a black background and/or overlay on the content that I'm pasting in. Or, even if I just select-all, and move the content slightly (one pixel to the left), the thing turns all blotchy with mostly reversed colors but not consistently. I just don't see what's causing it. Something like the attached. The images could be either png or jpg, with same result. I've tried with both foreground and background colors set to white, no difference. Example attached.
